Welcome to one of Nothern Europe's leading breeding facilities for the conservation of the European bison, less commonly known as the wisent. The European bison is an endangered species.
After the First World War there were only around 50 individuals left in Europe. Today there are almost 3000 living in various zoological and national parks.
Avesta Bisonpark played an important role in saving the European bison. Today there are around 30 bisons here. If you are lucky you may see ine of the 4-8 calves that are born in the park every year.
A bison bull can wiegh as much as 1 tonne and reach a shoulder height of almost 1,90 m. They are roughly 2,9m long. The bulls are very aware of their size and strenght, so it's a good idea to stay on the right side of the fence.
Enjoy the garden or go on a guided tour!
The animal enclosure surrounds a little farm dating back to the turn of the 19th century. In the Barn Café you can have something nice to eat or just have a cup of coffee and a piece of cake. If you choose a guided tour you will get to see the bison up close, and hear the story of how the park was established.
The park is open every day, 11-16:30, 25th of may to 8th of september 2013.
