Historical nature
Sala has a lot to offer nature enthusiasts. If you like history as well, it’s just icing on the cake considering that many of the lush natural environments in Sala today came into being due to the former mining operations of the Sala Silver Mine. You can, for example, enjoy the lovely walking path along Gröna Gången, “the green path,” which follows the mine’s huge water system, or soak up both nature and culture at the same time by wandering down the Gruvdammsrundan hiking trail, which runs atop the dam wall of the Helgonmossen bog. There are of course also many other hiking trails through pristine natural environments in Sala.

Right in the middle of Sala’s picturesque city park, you can try your luck at fishing in the Ekeby ponds, which were once used to supply hydropower to Gustav Vasa’s old smelting hut. If you’d like to find out more about this, a guided city walk is offered periodically with interesting facts about how and why the city of Sala came to be. You can also hop on your bike for a self-guided tour of the city on one of the suggested bicycle routes. And if you like mountain biking, you’ve just got to try the seven-kilometer Knektleden MTB trail.

Cluster of culture
You’ll find interesting culture in a number of forms throughout Sala. The Täljstenen cultural quarter includes attractions such as the Aguéli Museum, erected in memory of Sala-born artist Ivan Aguéli. Cultural events are held frequently for families and groups of all ages. One example is the Culture Night event, which is celebrated every spring in the city. Väsby Kungsgård, a royal farm where King Gustav II Adolf often stayed and where, among other things, he signed the letter establishing Sweden’s first court of appeals in 1614, now houses a museum with 8,000 objects on display.

Other cultural sites well worth a visit are the Sala Silver Mine museum and large scenic above-ground area with over 50 historic buildings – a perfect opportunity for a culture history walk whenever you like. And when you’re out in the countryside, you can visit interesting places such as the museum at the Sätra Brunn health springs and spa, the Odendisa Runestone in Svartådalen, or events such as Möklinta Week, to mention just a few.
